Chiropractic for Chronic Ear Infections

More and more parents are beginning to look to chiropractors to complement their children's health care. Chiropractic care involves diagnosing spinal misalignments and correcting them by adjusting the spine. A slight pressure is most commonly used with children rather than the more forceful manipulation sometimes used with adults.

Chiropractors attempt to get to the root cause of a health problem rather than just treat the symptoms. Misalignments of the spine (also called subluxations) can occur during childbirth, from tumbles or falls, or from any other normal activity. Misalignments left untreated can irritate the nerves and eventually disrupt the body's ability to function properly. The purpose of a chiropractic adjustment is to help to restore the normal functioning of the nervous system so the body can heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery.

Ear Infections and Chiropractic

Ear pain is the number one reason for child visits to chiropractors. Many chiropractors believe that there is a strong link between the birthing process and recurrent ear infection, also known as otitis media. During the birthing process, cervical (neck) vertebrae can become misaligned, disrupting nerve function, which can affect the eustachian tube. This may lead to fluid buildup in the middle ear and cause otitis media.

Ear infection or otitis media accounts for over 35% of all pediatrician visits in the United States. Antibiotics, the usual treatment, are not always effective and may even lead to a recurrence of ear infections. Many children are dealing with a continuing cycle of repeat ear infections, which lands them back at the pediatrician for more antibiotics. For nearly 100 years, the chiropractic profession has claimed that ear and other upper respiratory infections respond favorably to chiropractic adjustments.

A promising study published in the Journal of Clinical Chiropractic Pediatrics indicates that there is a strong correlation between chiropractic adjustments and the resolution of ear infections. 332 children with chronic ear infections participated in the study. Each child, ranging in age from 27 days to 5 years, was given a series of chiropractic adjustments. The results show that close to 80% of the children did not experience another ear infection within the six-month period following their initial visits. The six-month period included maintenance treatments every four to six weeks. Joan M. Fallon, D.C., the author of the study and the chiropractor who treated the children in the study, states that this pilot study can serve as a starting point from which the chiropractic profession can begin to examine its role in the treatment of children with chronic ear infections. She asserts that large-scale clinical trials need to be undertaken in the field.

Side Effects of Chiropractic

Even though this study is not definitive and more scientific research needs to be done in this area, chiropractic treatment is a conservative, drugless approach to consider trying if your child has a history of chronic ear infections. Under normal circumstances, chiropractic adjustments are painless and will not hurt your child. There are no invasive procedures and chiropractors do not use drugs that can have harmful side effects.

Serious side effects from spinal adjustments appear to be rare. A recent article in Integrative Medicine reported the low risk of serious complications from neck and low back adjustments. According to the literature review, the estimated risk for serious complications from neck adjustments is 6.39 per 10 million adjustments. For low back adjustments, it is 1 per 100 million adjustments.

Pediatric Chiropractic Care

The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) provides ongoing pediatric courses and seminars for chiropractors, plus an online searchable directory of pediatric chiropractors. The Holistic Pediatric Association also provides an online directory of pediatric health professionals, including chiropractors.

I would like to give you some helpful information with regard to dizziness that your body will thank you for.

Dizziness

Dizziness is not a disease, it is an indication that there is something wrong somewhere in your body. The dizzy spells are your body's WARNING system that tells you, something is interfering with the proper function of your body's organs, nerves, glands, or muscles.

Dizziness is a SYMPTOM.

Not a disease.

As a chiropractor we know the relationship between your upper neck bones and that misalignments can cause vertigo, which is a fancy medical term for "dizziness".

REMEMBER: All of the functions of your body are under control of your nervous system. Your nervous system originates in your brain where nerve energy is transmitted down through the spinal cord inside your spine and branches out between the vertebrae as spinal nerves.

Often, something causes your spine to twist or move the wrong direction. You can just fall asleep on the couch and cause this. This twist creates a misalignment of your spinal bones which can put pressure on your delicate, super sensitive nerves in your body, which interferes with the transmission of nerve energy at 100%. I look at it like I do the ON/OFF switch to a lamp.

If the power is turned on, with no interference, the lamp works fine. If there is a problem with something in the electrical wiring (like your nervous system) there will be a problem with the lamp working, even though it may seem like it's the switch.

Now you could replace the light switch, but what if it's in the wiring outside the light switch or the fuse box, changing the switch won't help. The same goes for treating your body with drugs. If you have something wrong and you cover it up, you're not treating the problem.

You're not taking care of the problem,

you're treating the symptom.

After ruling out other causes, such as caffeine and aspirin sensitivity, we diagnose the problem as a spinal misalignment. If the front end of your car is misaligned, you're not going to fix the problem, putting new tires on the front end continuously.

Avoid the Big Time Corporate Heart Attack

You probably know the enron CEO Ken Lay's life was cut short by a heart attack. His doctors knew he had heart diseas. In fact, he had suffered several heart attacks before the one that killed him and he'd been taking statin drugs to lower his cholesterol for years.

Statin drugs work by blocking the body's production of cholesterol. This lowers total cholesterol - not just "bad" LDL cholesterol but also good HDL cholesterol. And to avoid developing heart disease - even to reverse damage that's already been done - HDL is key.

HDL can reduce your risk of heart disease regardless of your LDL levels. The framingham study (the most reliable and unbiased source of data for heart disease risk) shows that if your HDL is high enough, your LDL will have no negative impact on your heart health. In fact, if your HDL is above 85, you are at no greater risk of heart disease if your total cholesterol is 350 tha if it's 150.

Here are four natural ways to increase your HDL:

1. Exercise in intervals at progressively higher intensity as you get used to it - for 20 minutes every day.

2. Eliminate trans-fats from your diet. Cut out breaded/fried foods, commercially baked crackers and cookies, and anything containing hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated vegetable or soybean oil.

3. Increase your omega-3 fatty acids by adding fish oils, avacados, nuts, olives, and eggs to your diet.

4. Add fresh garlic to your meals as often as possible.

Maggie is our Patient of the Month February 2010 for many reasons.

First, she is consistent in her appointments and as a result she is making excellent progress. I heard rumor there has been some dancing taking place!

Secondly, I have to tell you, is Maggie's laugh. Maggie has an infectious laugh that spreads throughout the office. She is so fun have her as a patient!

Lastly, but NOT least, Maggie has personally referred into the office her family (husband, son, daughter, and grandson) all of who are now new patients. She didn't stop there though... Maggie has set up and coordinated 4 message screenings at her workplace Cuyamaca College. At these screenings my staff were able to meed (and massage!) her coworkers. Thanks to Maggie 15 have become new patients! WOW!!!

Thank you. Maggie, for all that you have done for my practice and you've done for your friends, co-workers and family to help them get out of pain.

Smile Already, It's Your Birthday!

Washington's Birthday is the official name designated to what many of us know as President's Day. During the month of February the birthday of two of our greatest President's takes place: both George Washington, who was born on Feb. 22nd and Abrahame Lincoln, born on Feb. 12th.

However, Washington's birthday has been publicly celebrated since he was in office, before Abraham Lincolin was even born. Much of the debate over the name of the holiday springs from the fact that state's can follow their own holidays how they see fit and many of them chose to also honor Lincoln, calling the celebration President's Day

It was in 1968 that the term President's Day came up for legal consideration in the Congress but was shot down, though the holiday was moved to fall between the two President's birthdays. Again in the 1980's there was a resurgence of the term with advertisers which solidified the holiday name in American culture. Today, few Americans prefer to call the holiday Washington's Birthday in lieu of President's Day.

Dear Patients and Friends,

What a wild ride this past year has been. Many people I know had their best year yet, while others took a rough ride. You’ve hopefully heard the saying: “It’s not what happens to you that de! nes your character, it’s how you respond.”

So whether 2009 was a great year for you, or a not so great year, I think it’s wise for us all to review what has happened, both good and bad, and use those lessons to guide us to prosperity in 2010. Agreed? Well let’s get to business then.

The celebration of the New Year is the oldest of all holidays. It was ! rst observed in ancient Babylon about 4000 years ago. In the years around 2000 BC, Babylonians celebrated the beginning of a new year on what is now March 23, although they themselves had no written calendar.

Late March actually is a logical choice for the beginning of a new year. It is the time of year that spring begins and new crops are planted. January 1, on the other hand, has no astronomical nor agricultural signi! cance. It is purely arbitrary.

The Babylonian New Year celebration lasted for eleven days. Each day had its own particular mode of celebration, but it is safe to say that modern New Year’s Eve festivities pale in comparison.

What to do for a better new year, and NEW YOU!

Okay folks, the #1 New Year’s resolution of ALL TIME is to lose weight and get in shape. It’s kind of startling that around 80% of the U.S. population is considered to be overweight.

Do you know Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer?

The story of plucky Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is a deeply ingrained piece of Christmas mythology. So it may surprise you to learn that it is not a traditional folk tale. A young copywriter named Robert May created Rudolph in 1939 as a promotional tool for the Montgomery Ward chain of department stores.

The company printed up the story, and gave away 2.4 million copies of the booklet to customers that Christmas. It was so popular that millions more copies were given away over the next several years. It wasn’t until May persuaded his bosses to turn the copyright over to him that it became a financial success. Under May’s direction, Rudolph appeared in cartoons, books, songs, and more over the years, securing both May’s fortune and the story’s place as a holiday staple.

A Sweet Way to Lower Blood Pressure

Great news for chocoholics: Dark chocolate, a good source of powerful antioxidant phenols, has recently been found to help reduce blood pressure.

A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association included six men and seven women ages 55-64 with mildly high blood pressure. Every day for two weeks, participants ate a 100-gram piece of dark chocolate. They balanced its hefty 480 calories by not eating other foods similar in nutrients and calories. Half of the participants got dark chocolate, while half got white chocolate.

At the end of the study, those who ate dark chocolate saw a significant drop in blood pressure (by an average of fi ve points for systolic and two points for diastolic blood pressure). Those who ate white chocolate experienced no benefit.

To enjoy the health benefi ts and delicious flavor of dark chocolate, you don’t need to eat a 480-calorie candy bar. In fact, one tablespoon of unsweetened dark cocoa has a mere 80 calories, with all the benefi ts. So mix it into your coffee or whirl into a smoothie to help keep your blood pressure in a healthy range.

3 Supplements That Increase Brain Power (for anyone planning on passing out on the couch after Thanksgiving dinner…)

Do you sometimes feel like you're losing your mind? Forgetting things? Having a senior moment? Age-related memory loss is not something you have to accept. Instead, try supplementing your diet with three memory-boosting powerhouses.

1. Acetyl-l-carnitine

Acetyl-l-carnitine just may be a fountain of youth for your brain. It seems to delay the onset of age-related cognitive decline and improve overall cognitive function in the elderly. It also protects the brain from damage due to poor circulation, and it helps repair injured nerve cells. Research shows that people using recommended doses of Acetyl-l-carnitine (500 mg to 1,500 mg daily) for three months had a marked improvement in general cognitive function.

2. Phosphatidylserine

Phosphatidylserine (PS) is a member of a class of biochemicals called phospholipids. Although this nutrient occurs naturally in cell membranes, it's most concentrated in the brain. In well-documented studies, PS helped restore brain function and improve learning, name recall, concentration, face recognition, the ability to remember phone numbers, and the ability to find misplaced objects.

Brain health depends on PS for a number of important metabolic effects, and it makes it possible for nutrients to move freely in and out of the brain cells. To get the full benefit of this supplement, take it with some fish oil or some fatty fish like salmon or sardines.

3. Ginkgo Biloba

The overwhelming majority of research on ginkgo biloba has shown that it has a positive effect on thinking. Numerous double-blind studies indicate that ginkgo extract is effective in reducing the progress of dementia or the severity of its symptoms. Research has also shown that ginkgo modestly improves both memory and the speed of cognitive functioning.

The leaves of the ginkgo plant contain compounds called glycosides and terpenoids, which are believed to have memory-enhancing properties. Most important, ginkgo improves circulation to the tissues, notably the brain, and its powerful antioxidant action protects against memory-robbing cell damage from free radicals.

Some experts - including Dr. Al Sears - recommend against taking ginkgo long-term because they believe the results are not sustainable. Nonetheless, a six-week cycle of ginkgo with a few weeks off every so often should give you plenty of benefits.

I Love Autumn

I love autumn. I love watching the leaves fall.

Autumn is a season for big decisions -- like whether or not it's too late to start spring cleaning.

Autumn -- time to drag out your winter clothes and see what kind of summer fun the moths had.

The autumn leaves are a lot like raising kids. First they turn on you, and then they fly away. And next thing you know, you look out the window and they're back!

I got tired of looking at all those leaves in my yard, so I got up off the couch and went into action. I closed the curtains.

The leaves are beginning to fall, and soon only two things will be hanging from the trees: the last leaf and the first football coach to lose in the playoffs.

Ah yes, summer's out and autumn's in. From swimming pools to football pools....

I loved the end of summer when I was a kid. It always meant I no longer had to be embarrassed by the coach putting me in right field.

This is an exciting autumn. Our athletes are breaking the records for the most Olympic medals, and our political candidates are breaking the records for the most campaign promises.

I could tell there was a hint of autumn in the air when my son's football smashed me in the face.

It's fall, that time when the colors change from green to red to gold -- and that's just the gunk in your swimming pool.

Looks like it’s that time again already, time to get out pumpkin carving kit and bags of candy. Here’s a quick history on the second biggest spending holiday in the U.S., at $2.5 Billion dollars, yes that’s with a “B”. It’s second only to Christmas.

Halloween History:

- Halloween, referred to as All Hallows Eve, was originally a pagan holiday in which they honored the dead. It was celebrated on October 31 since this was the last day of the Celtic calendar. The celebration dates back some 2,000 years.

- The ancient Celts thought that spirits and ghosts wondered the streets on all Hallows Eve so they began wearing masks and costumes in order to not be recognized as human.

- The jack-o-lantern tradition comes from an old Irish folk tale about a man named Stingy Jack. It was said that he was unable to get into heaven and was turned away from the devil because of his tricky ways. So he set off to wander the world looking for a resting place. For light, Stingy Jack used a burning coal ember in a hollowed out turnip. When the Irish immigrated to the U.S. during the Great Potato Famine of 1845-1850, they found that turnips were not as readily available like they were in the homeland. So they started carving pumpkins as a replacement for their tradition.

- On Halloween, Irish peasants would beg the rich for food. For those that refused, they would play a practical joke. So, in an effort to avoid being tricked, the rich would hand out cookies, candy, and fruit – a practice that morphed into trick-or-treating today.

Lick Your Sugar Habit

A few months ago, a concerned mother asked me about her teenage son. He was having trouble concentrating in school and his grades were suffering. Her family doctor said the boy had ADHD (Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder) and prescribed drugs to "fix" the problem.

When I asked her about her son's diet, she admitted that he loves soda - drinking as many as four a day. I suggested that he cut out sugar entirely.

Now, three months later, her son feels much better and his grades are improving. Best of all, he doesn't need prescription drugs.

For years, I've been telling all my patients (not just teens) that sugar is deceptively dangerous. And new studies are backing me up. One, in the American Journal of Public Health, shows that teens in Norway who drank the highest amounts of sugary sodas suffered the highest rates of mental disorders, including ADHD.

Over the years, I've reviewed dozens of studies on the dangers of sugar. So far, sugar has been related to 76 clinically proven health consequences. A few:

Sugar can cause premature aging.

Sugar can impair the structure of your DNA.

Sugar feeds cancer cells and has been connected with the development of cancer of the breast, ovaries, prostate, rectum, pancreas, biliary tract, lung, gallbladder, and stomach.

Sugar can produce a significant rise in total cholesterol, triglycerides, and bad cholesterol, and a decrease in good cholesterol.

Sugar can cause a decrease in insulin sensitivity, thereby causing abnormally high insulin levels and, eventually, diabetes.

Needless to say, limiting your sugar intake is essential to good health. If you're considering a sugar substitute, stay away from products like NutraSweet, which are full of a dangerous toxin called aspartame. Stevia is your best bet.

11 Ways of Managing Health

Well Into Old Age

Remember when you got your first gray hair or noticed that first little crinkle around your eye? It wasn't a milestone marked with the same enthusiasm as, say, losing your first baby tooth.

But whether we like it or not, our bodies show signs of aging as we march through our 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond.

Some difficulties (such as bone-density loss or substantial hearing impairment) are more serious than others (like minor memory lapses). Still, almost all are, to some degree, correctable.

Read on to find out how you can successfully manage common age-related health issues — and enjoy a longer, healthier life.

Weight Training for Stronger Bones
Bone-density loss can begin as early as your 20s, when calcium and phosphate, which help form bones in childhood, can start to be reabsorbed by the body.

Without preventive measures, the re-absorption process speeds up after midlife, creating fragile, more easily fractured bones. "A simple weight-bearing exercise like walking can slow the rate of bone-mineral loss. Even the most frail person can benefit from a personalized regimen," whether it's walking, yoga, or using free weights.

Getting enough vitamin D, which is about 10 minutes of sunlight everyday and calcium is also crucial, he adds, and for a serious problem, bone-building medications are another good option.

Better Sleep, Better Days

If your bed doubles as a comfy place to snack, read, and watch TV, it can begin to impact your sleep, causing daytime fatigue as your natural sleep cycles change with age. "Keep your bedroom primarily for sleep". That way you will associate your bed with slumber and not with more lively activities that could interfere with relaxing.

It also helps counter the fact that as you get older, you spend less time in energy-restoring deep sleep, and you may have a harder time falling back to sleep if you wake up too early.

"It also helps to avoid sweets, caffeinated drinks, alcohol, and heavy meals at night, and get enough exercise each day." Another tip: Go outside in the natural light each afternoon, to enhance your body's natural sleep rhythms.

Keep an Eye on the Scale

If you gain weight more easily now than you did years ago, it's probably because, like most people, you tend to do less calorie-burning exercises. Your lean muscle mass then decreases — a process also exacerbated by age — and when your body has less muscle, it burns calories less efficiently.

Muscle burns calories, so it’s important to keep up your muscle mass. You'll also need to cut calories and increase your activity levels to reach the weight you want. Stay ACTIVE.

Make low-calorie fresh fruits and vegetables more central to your diet. (If your weight gain is dramatic and you're not overeating, have your thyroid function checked.)

Control Your Urinary Frequency

Feeling like you "gotta go" too often is quite common in men in their 50s and beyond, and in women beginning in their 40s. I recommend drinking as much pH alkaline water as possible. If you need more information on where to get this machine, just send me an email to RichterChiropractic@gmail.com

Urinary urge incontinence and overactive bladder were once problems rarely discussed in public. Recently, the stigma has declined with the airing of none-too-subtle TV commercials touting various anticholinergic (spasm-reducing) drugs, which have provided relief for many.

Behavioral treatments like doing Kegel exercises for women, measuring and carefully timing your fluid intake, and keeping toilet visits on a set schedule can also help.

Hair Loss: Truly Treatable

Whether you're male or female, if your hair is thinning "don't simply accept it as part of aging." Hair loss in older men and women is often caused by androgenic alopecia, a condition related to hormonal decreases, but you need to rule out other causes. That's another reason to see your doctor as soon as you notice more strands than usual on your comb.

Save Your Skin

This is a big one for women and should be a big one for men. Almost inevitably, your skin will naturally grow dryer and thinner over time. And sun exposure only hastens the process, because it damages COLLAGEN, a key protein that gives strength and structure to the skin.

The answer: Slather on protection. "I think daily moisturizers that include sunscreen are not that effective because sometimes people don't remember to apply sunscreen at all, or don't put on enough and they put on some types that actually can damage their skin." There are good sunscreens and bad sunscreens but I’ll save that issue for another BONUS in an upcoming newsletter. For those (often men) who may not enjoy wearing face cream, like me I recommend keeping a hat by the door for every trip outside. Along with sun protection, add some of the very best whole food supplements on the market today, Standard Process Labs. It's on the Tip of My Tongue...

So, where are your keys, anyway? Though frustrating, such momentary memory lapses are a relatively minor age-related inconvenience.

Recent research done by neuroscientists at Jacobs University in Bremen, Germany, however, suggests that getting in shape physically may help your brain fight such blanks.

Using advanced MRI techniques, they found that regions of the brain linked to decision-making and focus were much stronger in older people who were physically fit than those who weren't.

You can fight memory lapses with food too: The antioxidants in walnuts and berries, for instance, can help boost mental acuity by battling free-radical compounds that damage brain cells, according to Tufts University nutrition researcher James Joseph, PhD.

Based on that information I suggest you go to a health food store and purchase some walnuts for your daily intake today.

Relieving Achy Joints

This is a big one. Oh, my aching…you fill in the blank.

Whether your back, fingers, or knees are affected, joint pain usually increases with wear and tear. As long as the pain is mild and there's no redness or pronounced inflammation, the commonly recommended treatments include mild stretching and exercise, weight loss if you're overweight, warm showers, and cold packs or moist heating pad (whichever feels better).

A landmark National Institutes of Health study of the dietary supplements glucosamine and chondroitin, widely touted as rebuilders of cartilage, showed that in high-quality form, they may also help to reduce moderate-to-severe knee pain.

Solving the "For Some Reason I Can't Read the Menu" Problem

If you're over 40, you may already be noticing that you can't always focus too clearly on objects close to you.

This is a natural symptom of aging called presbyopia, and it's caused by decreased flexibility in your eye's lens and the muscle fibers around it.

Luckily, there are a multitude of corrective options.

Eyeglass wearers may choose progressive addition lenses (PALs), which seamlessly provide correction for distance, intermediate, and near vision.

Contact-lens wearers might prefer monovision: One lens is corrected for distance and the other for near vision.

"It takes some getting used to, but can have terrific results," says ophthalmologist Jodi Abramson, MD, medical director of Laser and Corneal Surgery Associates in White Plains, New York.

And for permanent presbyopia correction, surgical choices include LASIK and CK (conductive keratoplasty) procedures, performed with lasers and radio waves, respectively.

What Did You Say Again?

Age-related hearing loss — an extremely common issue — remains "very emotional" for many people.

If you're a baby boomer, the good news is you're likely to be more comfortable with technology and more accepting of hearing aids.

Some devices are so tiny they're barely visible; just as important, they can be programmed to counteract specific kinds of hearing loss.

Universities across the country have audiology clinics that prescribe and fit hearing aids, often offering the most reasonable prices around.

Just "don't get hearing aids by mail order," even if they're inexpensive.

"They can't be properly customized that way."

It’s kind of crazy how the Summer has just flown by and we are already approaching Autumn. There is something interesting that I have noted in my practice: During the Summer, I don’t seem to have nearly as many teachers coming into my office as new patients. They just don’t seem to have as much neck and upper back strain, headaches, muscle tension and tightness during the hot Summer months. But we see a lot more MOMs!!! Just follow the kids and that’s where the stress is, right?

By the way, don’t let your kids read this….just kidding.

Words of Inspiration

There once was a religious man who had nothing for his family to eat . He had an old rifle and three bullets. So he decided that he would go out hunting and kill some wild game for dinner. As he went down the road, he saw a rabbit. He shot at the rabbit and missed. Then he saw a squirrel and fired a shot at the squirrel and mi ssed. The squirrel disappeared into a hole in a cottonwood tree.

As he went further, he saw a large wild “Tom” turkey in the tree, but he had only one bullet remaining. A voice spoke to him and said, “Pray first, aim high and stay focused.”

However, at the same time, he saw a deer, which was a better kill. He brought the gun down and aimed at the deer. But then he saw a rattlesnake between his legs about to bite him, so he naturally brought the gun down further to shoot the rattlesnake. Still, the voice said again to him, “I said Pray, aim high, and stay focused.” So the man decided to listen to God’s voice.

He prayed, then aimed the gun high up in the tree and shot the wild turkey. The bullet bounced off the turkey and killed the deer. The handle fell off the gun and HIT the snake in the head and killed it. And when the gun had gone off, it knocked him into a pond. When he stood up to look around, he had fish in all his pockets, a dead deer and a turkey to eat for his family.

Moral of the story:

Aim and shoot high in your life and stay focused on your goals, whether they be career goals, family goals, health goals, financial goals, spiritual goals, etc. Never let others discourage you regarding things you have or haven’t done in the past.

Is Your Lifestyle Killing You?

The average life expectancy in the U.S. today is 76 years. Depending on your lifestyle, you may go well beyond that. Here's a little test to give you an estimate of your expected lifespan. You start with the number 76, and add or subtract from that average.

Exercise: Do you exercise vigorously at least three times a week? If you do, add 3 years to 76. If not, subtract 3 years.

Diet: Do you avoid bad fats and processed foods and, instead, choose lots of omega-3-rich fish and grass-fed beef? If so, add 2 years.

Weight: Are you at a healthy weight? If you're overweight by 50 pounds or more, subtract 8 years. Thirty to 40 pounds, subtract 4. Ten to 29 pounds, subtract 2.

Blood Pressure: If you know your blood pressure, add 1 year.

Drinking: Do you have more than two alcoholic drinks (cocktails, beer, or wine) a day? If you do, subtract 1 year. And for each additional daily drink, subtract 2 more. (Remember what I said yesterday: One to seven drinks a week is healthy - no more.)

Smoking: If you smoke more than two packs of cigarettes a day, subtract 8 years. One to two packs a day, subtract 6. One-half to one pack subtract 3.

Driving: Have you received a traffic ticket or been involved in a traffic accident in the past year? If so, subtract 4 years. Other violations, subtract 1. If you always wear your seatbelt, add one.

Working vs. Retiring: If you are 65 or older and are still working, add 3 years.

Relaxation: If you take a relaxed approach to life, add 3 years. If you're aggressive, driven, or anxious, subtract 3. And if you consider yourself "unhappy," subtract another year.

Gender: Since women tend to live longer than men, add 3 years if you're a woman. If you're a man, subtract 3.

Age: How long you've already lived matters. If you're between the ages of 30 and 39, add 2 years. Forty to 49, add 3. Fifty to 69, add 4. Seventy or older, add 5.

Family History: If any grandparent reached age 85, add 2 years. If all your grandparents reached age 80, add 6. If one of your parents died of a stroke or heart attack before the age of 50, subtract 4.

Based on the above categories, determine what you need to work on. Do you need to exercise more? Eat better? Lose weight? Just because your father died from a heart attack doesn't mean that is your destiny. You have information he may not have had. Look at the diseases that run in your family and work to lower your risk factors. You can start - today - to improve your longevity by making positive changes.

A woman goes to her doctor who verifies that she is pregnant. This is her first pregnancy. The doctor asks her if she has any questions. She replies, "Well, I'm a little worried about the pain. How much will childbirth hurt?"

Dear Patient,

Hello. Let’s start this month’s newsletter by giving a salute to an American icon, Michael Jackson. Like him or not, he made a tremendous impact on American pop culture as we know it today. I think I shared the sentiment of shock with millions of people upon learning of his passing. His 51^st birthday was to be August 29^th. So, here’s to you, King of Pop!

LITTLE-KNOWN FACTS ABOUT THE KING OF POP

1. Michael Jackson's favorite animated character was Pinocchio

2. When he was a child his favorite books included Rip Van Winkle & The Old Man and the Sea

3. Michael Jackson was very ticklish

4. Saint Vincent, an island in the Caribbean, once issued Michael Jackson stamps

5. The singer once owned a boa constrictor called “Muscles”

6. As a youngster he used to put spiders in sister La Toyah’s bed

7. He played a scarecrow in The Wiz, a movie version of the Wizard of Oz

8. He has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (one for himself and one as part of the Jackson Five)

9. Quincy Jones nicknamed him “smelly” – a slang term similar to “funky”

10. Jackson described his own voice on early Jackson 5 records as “like Minnie Mouse”

The Difference Between Women & Men….

1) Nicknames:

If Claire, Louise and Hannah go out for lunch, they will call each other Claire, Louise and Hannah. If Russell, John and Trevor go out, they will affectionately refer to each other as Jackson, Parrot-face and TC [Top Cat - from the 1970's television cartoon series].

2) Eating out:

When the bill arrives, Russell, John and Trevor will each throw in $20, even though it's only for $32.50. None of them will have anything smaller and none will actually admit they want change back. When the girls get their bill, out come their pocket calculators.

3) Bathrooms:

A man has six items in his bathroom: toothbrush and toothpaste, shaving cream, razor, a bar of soap, and a towel. The average number of items in the typical woman's bathroom is 337. [A man would not be able to identify more than 20 of these items.]

4) Arguments:

A woman has the last word in any argument.
Anything a man says after that is the beginning of a new argument.

5) Cats:

Women love cats.
Men say they love cats, b

ut when women aren't looking, men kick cats.

6) Future:

A woman worries about the future until she gets a husband.
A man never worries about the future until he gets a wife.

7) Success:

A successful man is one who makes more money than his wife can spend. A successful woman is one who can find such a man.

8) Marriage:

A woman marries a man expecting he will change, but he doesn't.
A man marries a woman expecting that she won't change, but she does.

9) Dressing Up:

A lady will dress up to go shopping, water the plants, empty the bins, answer the 'phone, read a book, and get the post. A man will dress up for weddings and funerals.

10) Offspring:

Ah, children. A woman knows all about her children. She knows about dental appointments and romances, best friends, favorite foods, secret fears and hopes and dreams.
A man is vaguely aware of some short people living in the house.

I had my carpets shampooed … then I stopped vacuuming … BUT WHY?

I got over the flu … then I stopped taking my vitamins … HUH?

I had my car engine replaced … then I stopped changing my oil … ABSURD!

I had my hair dyed … then I stopped brushing my hair … FREAKY!

Wait … why is this one TRUE of many patients? We just don’t get it!
